Well, yes, they are pretty fast but that’s the way it goes. In fact, some of the YouTube videos sound like the singers are in some kind of race. Since we’ve done this before, I didn’t slow it down. Let me know if that was an incorrect assumption. The soprano descant bit at the end doesn’t come across very well at the end. Whoever is singing that (cough, Katrina/Tonia, cough) won’t get much help here. Tenors, I’m sorry that your part is so crazy but you get some of the most interesting parts. Bass 2, sorry that your part if mostly fffffffffffff but at least you get the two most dramatic bits.
Please don’t forget that, as with all spirituals, this is a conductor driven piece. There will be many swoops, dramatic pauses, hesitations, driving tempos, holds and other embellishments that will require you to know your notes and WATCH THE DIRECTOR! These rehearsal tracks can only convey so much. For the rest you must watch Mary Lee.
